Ways to Protect Your Skin and the Environment

You can look flawless and save the world at the same time. At least it's possible when you go and choose skin products that are good for you and the environment. With ultra gentle plant-based formulas, using natural and organic products is the perfect way to look after your self while protecting the environment.

Avoid Petrochemicals

Petroleum based ingredients aren't good for your skin nor the environment. These ingredients have the effect of forming a cling film like barrier to the skin and stops your pores from breathing and releasing toxins. It would also do the environment a favor to avoid this ingredient as it's derived mostly from crude oil. Being a non-renewable resource, we can do well to crude oil, don't you think?

Watch out for Phthalates

Commonly found in beauty product packaging, phthalates are known to be endocrine disruptors. These can go so far as causing cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Evidence has also been found that phthalates can cause male fish to show feminized physical characteristics.

Say no to products that contain Triclosan

When washed down the drain, Triclosan, often found in toothpaste and hand wash, can react with sunlight to form dioxins which accumulate in the environment. Triclosan was found in sediment dredged up from over 30 years ago, proving that it amasses harm for the environment for a very long time. As an alternative, look for the natural antimicrobial and antiseptic functions from ingredients such as Tea Tree and Propolis.

Go for products with a high percentage of organic ingredients

Organic ingredients are special for a reason -- they are grown without the use of potentially harmful chemicals like pesticides, which have been implicated in all sorts of health issues, as well as the severely declining bee population.

Choose certified organic beauty products where possible

Organic certification for ingredients means that plants must be managed sustainably so as not to harm the natural flora and fauna of the area. Here at Zafra, we make sure that the products we feature are recognized renowned certification programs like the American National Standards Institute, National Organic Program, Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards and California Certified Organic Farmers.
